Who We Are
A leading non-government charity organization, Sarthak Manav Kushthashram (SMK) is internationally acclaimed for its contribution in helping leprosy and tuberculosis (TB) patients lead a dignified life. SMK is committed to its cause for the past three decades and is headquartered in Rajasthan's capital city Jaipur, some 300 km from Delhi.
The leprosy has been eradicated, but SMK believes that the fight is far from over. Reluctance over accepting leprosy patients as equals still prevails in some sections of the Indian society. The organization not only rehabilitates leprosy patients through its branches in Jaipur, Jodhpur and Ajmer cities in Rajasthan, but has also developed a strong support system for them. From providing them shelter and medical assistance to imparting vocational training, SMS goes an extra mile to make them feel independent financially, socially as well as emotionally.
What make the volunteers understand the core values of the organization are the people behind its governance. SMK is run by individuals who are affected by leprosy themselves. The organization has a democratic set-up with elected members making decisions.
After eradication of leprosy, the SMK has now trained its sights on providing medical assistance to TB patients. Since 2003, the SMK has been extending help in rehabilitation and cure of TB patients under the government's RNTCP (Revised National Tuberculosis Control Progarmme).
